How to Get Your Unarmed Security Guard License in Washington State (2025 Guide)
Thinking about starting a career in private security? Great news—Washington State offers a clear path to becoming a licensed unarmed security guard. Whether you're new to the industry or transitioning from another field, this guide will walk you through every step you need to take to get licensed and ready for work.
At Central Protection, we’re here to help you every step of the way—from training and testing to final submission of your application.
✅ Step 1: Meet Basic Requirements
Before you begin the licensing process, you must meet the following qualifications:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident
- Have no disqualifying criminal convictions
- Be mentally and physically capable of performing security duties
✅ Step 2: Create a SecureAccess Washington (SAW) Account
Go to secureaccess.wa.gov and set up your SAW profile. This account allows you to access Washington State’s online professional licensing portal.
Once registered, navigate to the Department of Licensing (DOL) security guard application section and begin your license application.
✅ Step 3: Complete Fingerprinting
Next, schedule a digital fingerprint appointment through IdentoGO. Fingerprints are required for a background check conducted by both state and federal agencies.
Be sure to keep your receipt or tracking information—it may be needed during your application review.
✅ Step 4: Take the Pre-Assignment Training Course & Exam
Washington State requires all security guards to complete 8 hours of pre-assignment training before they can be licensed. Topics include:
- Legal powers and limitations of a security guard
- Report writing and patrol procedures
- Emergency response
- Conflict resolution and ethics
At Central Protection, our certified Qualifying Agent oversees this training and administers the required pre-assignment exam. You must pass the exam before moving forward.
✅ Step 5: Receive a Temporary License Number
Once your application is submitted and under review, the DOL will issue you a temporary license number (e.g., SEG1000000). This status is “pending review,” and you're not yet fully licensed.
✅ Step 6: Finalize Your License with Company Sponsorship
Once you’ve passed your training exam, our Qualifying Agent will submit a company invitation to the state. This step is required to activate your license.
Once submitted, your temporary license status will change to permanent, and you’ll receive your official license number and authorization to work as a guard.
🎓 Post-License Requirements
After you're licensed and begin working, Washington State requires an additional 8 hours of on-the-job (post-assignment) training within your first year.
Central Protection will guide you through this training as part of your continued professional development.
